The Power of Reiki

Reiki is the Japanese art of self-healing which was rediscovered by Dr Usui around 100 years ago. The word Reiki is made up of two separate words: Rei and Ki. Rei can be translated as 'universal' and ki stands for 'life energy'. The essence of the Reiki practice is the transferrance of 'universal life force' through the practitioner to the person being treated. This energy is a powerfully healing and loving energy which works on the body, mind and spirit. It goes to where it is needed most, whether it be an injured body part, such as a twisted ankle, or an emotional trauma, such as the loss of a loved one, or a more spiritual issue, such as a loss of direction in life.

The beauty of Reiki is that it is a completely natural, unintrusive, complementary therapy. There are no medications or presecriptions involved, no injections or painful precedures, and it works with any traditional treatment you might already be receiving.

What does a Reiki session look and feel like?

This is actually quite a difficult question to answer as each Reiki session is unique. This makes sense if you appreciate that every person is unique physically, emotionally and mentally. Our bodies are different, our experiences are different (even if they are of the same event) and how we respond to life is different too.

However, I can give you a basic description of a Reiki session and I can share some of the experiences people have felt during a treatment and afterwards. The Reiki session starts with a consultation, which covers areas, such as physical ailments or injuries and desired outcomes from the session. The client then lies on the bed and is brought into a relaxed state through breathing techniques. I then gently place my hands on the client, often starting over the eyes and the forehead, however, this might change depending on the reason for the Reiki session. Over the course of the session I place my hands over different parts of the body depending on the client's needs.  At the end of the treatment I will softly bringing the client  out of their meditative state, often using the beautiful sounds of a crystal bowl or koshi . After the session, clients often need a bit of time to reflect and share their experience, and to drink some water to refresh themselves.

As previously mentioned everybody experiences Reiki differently, but a sensation of warmth is often described along with a deep calming feeling. Some people see different coloured lights glowing around themselves. Others share that they felt like they had just had a massage, even though my hands are always held still in each position. Lots of people with pain describe how it eases, and often vanishing all together. Whilst others feel that the pain has been pulled out of them. Each experience is different, some people get on to the treatment table and are asleep with a couple of minutes! That is obviously what their bodies needed. So, I can't tell you what you will feel during the session, but what I can say is that if you are open and trusting in Reiki, it will help and heal you in the way that you need.
